Bringing the power of desktop distributions to mobile and embedded devices

Ubuntu to officially support ARM, also!

We're delighted to note that Canonical has also announced it will officially support ARM v7 with the April 2009 release of Ubuntu! Yes! I admit, I had hoped that they would also support the ARM v5/6 variations of the ARM processor, like the mojo project, but this is a first step in the right direction.

In the meantime for the next 6 month you can still get your ARM bits here at Mojo. After Canonical pushes the official Ubuntu release out we'll just see what it makes sense for us to support.

CELF 2008

George France made the trip to Ede, The Netherlands for the Embedded Linux Conference on 6-7 November, 2008. He gave a presentation on the state of the Mojo project, how we build the distributions, and a short tutorial on how you can install your very own Mojo distro under QEMU. Great job George!

Hasty ARMv6EL-VFP looking pretty good

The ARMv6EL-VFP build of Hasty is available. The build farm is running over the last thousand or two packages and will be done soon. Security and update feeds will follow once we've finished them for the v5EL-VFP build.

Hasty ARMv5EL with VFP support

The Hasty distribution compiled for ARMv5EL with VFP support is now available. This distribution has been targeted to the latest Marvell processors. Security and updates will follow shortly, after we get the v6+VFP build completed. The v5+VFP build took longer than expected when we found a number of packages that had compiled in the original v5 pour-over build from Grumpy, but couldn't compile on a straight Hasty distribution. Some days I'm amazed this stuff actually builds at all.

Beagle Board

If you haven't seen it, the BeagleBoard is an inexpensive ARM computer based on TI's OMAP3530 processor. There are good instructions at eLinux on how to bring up Mojo-based Beagle board.

Hasty ARMv5EL completed

It took a surprising amount of work to unwind the KDE dependencies, but we finally finished Hasty ARMv5EL. Both the main and the universe sections are in good shape, with 3100 binary packages in main and 10,700 in universe. Thanks to Rabeeh for the tip about backporting Mono which unwound a bunch of problems!

We'll be kicking off builds of Hasty ARMv5EL-VFP and v6EL-VFP this week.

Hasty ARMv5EL available

We have a preliminary release of Hasty Hippogriff for ARMv5EL. Hasty is derived from Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron". This preliminary release is a first-round build of the "main" section with a few of the required universe components added in.

Grumpy Universe

After several rounds of building, Grumpy main and universe for both ARMv5 and ARMv6 VFP are in good shape. The v5 code "universe" build ran on our farm of native ARM boxes and has completed over 7000 source packages from universe (and packages are still trickling in). The v6 code "universe" build ran on our farm of QEMU-emulated ARM boxes and has completed over 8400 source packages!

Grumpy ARMv6EL-VFP now available

The Grumpy ARMv5EL code is in good shape, so we turned loose the build system on ARMv6EL-VFP. The "main" section is mostly complete. Take a look here.
